New eatery boasts franchise’s entry into Michigan

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP-Mickey Truong started his career in the hospitality industry in high school working in a delicatessen.
Ever since, he has always loved the aroma, construction and taste of a great sandwich.
Truong and his wife, Minnie Pham, are offering a selection of 72 sandwiches and menu items at Gandolfo’s New York Delicatessen, which opened last week at 3013 West Shore Drive.
Tempting Menu
Mickey, 33, said they had long wanted to open a deli, and that when they saw Gandolfo’s menu they “knew this was the one.” He had formerly been in hotel management for 13 years.
Each of the sandwiches has a New York-inspired name, such as the Empire State (chicken breast, turkey, provolone cheese and cream cheese) for $5.49 and the Central Park (pastrami, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and spicy mustard on rye) for $8.19.

The deli also offers a foot-long Dagwood sandwich, named after the main character in the “Blondie & Dagwood” comic strip.
The deli, part of an Atlanta-based chain, has a wallpaper mural of downtown New York and serves traditional New York-style breakfast with bread or bagels in the morning. Soup and salads are also on the menu, which includes a New York cheesecake. Gandolfo’s has 55 stores in 17 states, and plans to open 17 sores this year.
“This is our first Michigan franchise and we’re excited to be breaking into a new state, Holland is a great location for us and will help broaden our base in the Midwest,” said Dan Pool, company CEO and owner.
In Holland
Truong and Pham, both Vietnam natives and naturalized U.S. citizens, have invested about $300,000 into the business, including $15,000 for the franchise.
The 1,450-square-foot restaurant has seating for 28 and offers delivery. Hours are 6 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday.
The restaurant has 11 full- and part-time employees.
